Can I play another character (or change the character's gender)?
No, you can take possession of another character, but you can't change your main character.
Mal0 prevents me from giving birth, swallowing all my offspring.
You can change the frequency at which it does so. Edit the 'custom.ini' file (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Valley of the Predators) and search for: 'fMalOSwallowOffspringFactor'.
Change the value. 10 will reduce the frequency.

My game crashes on startup
Try deactivating grass, sky and dynamic hair in the graphics options. Unity HDRP requires a graphics card with at least 2 GB VRAM, DirectX11 and Shader Model 5.0. The game does not work with CPU-integrated graphics cards.
